5.25" x 7.5" All edges stained dark. A .75" to 1.25" crack at top of leather-bound spine. Corners bumped, edges worn, covers discolored with age. Gilt debossed lettering to spine. Blue, .5" diagonal stripes to covers with black splotch design between stripes. 106 pp. Tightly bound. Von Kleift took his inspiration for this comedy from a copper print he saw in Switzerland. The original painting was assumed to be by a Dutch master. The play mocks the failings of human nature and the judicial system in a forgiving way. It is similar to Oedipus, in that in both plays the judge is guilty, but different insofar as Adam knows from the start who is guilty, as does the audience, and is trying his hardest to conceal the truth.
