About this title

Synopsis:

Humorous illustrations accompany these seven fairy tales that have originated from European Jewish folklore

Review:

From two masters who need no introduction comes a handsome reprint of the classic Newbery Honor book Zlateh the Goat and Other Stories. With wit and whimsy, Maurice Sendak illustrates seven tales about the legendary village of fools, Chelm, written by Isaac Bashevis Singer. Silly, outrageous, and sometimes poignant, the stories (translated from the Yiddish) reflect the traditions, heroes, and villains of middle European folklore. The devil makes an appearance more than once, as do the ever-so-foolish yet highly revered Elders of Chelm. In "The Mixed-Up Feet and the Silly Bridegroom," four sisters wake one morning to discover that their feet have become mixed up in the bed they share. A wise Elder advises their mother to whack the bed with a big stick, thus causing each girl to grab her own feet in pain and surprise. When their feet are sorted out, he then recommends, the sisters should be married off as soon as possible, to reduce the possibility of similar mix-ups in the future. Of course, none of them count on the breathtaking stupidity of the first bridegroom. Another not-so-clever fellow stars in "The First Shlemiel." When this man's wife asks him to do three things for her, he promptly and accidentally proceeds to breach each one of his promises, resulting in a baby with a bump on his head, an escaped rooster, and an emptied pot of jam. Somehow, though, possibly because ignorance is bliss, fools always come out on top in these wonderful stories, making for terrific read-aloud, laugh-aloud fun for the entire family. Terms of Sale:

BOOKS SHIPPED WITHIN MISSOURI are subject to a 8.450 sales tax. Books shipped outside of the US are subject to a small surcharge.

Shipping Terms:

IMPORTANT: PLEASE READ.

Orders to be shipped outside the US can be paid for either a) through ABE, in which case there will be a surcharge of about 5-10% due to the very high postal shipping charges by the U.S. Post Office, and the fact that ABE's fees apply both to the price of the book and the shipping; or, b)you can pay by way of PayPal, in which case there is no surcharge. If you choose to pay via ABE I will inform you of the amount of the surcharge as an 'extra charge,' which you can either accept or cancel the order.

Domestically, you can order the book through ABE, and if possible, pay via PayPal or through ABE.

Orders usually ship within 2 business days. Since recent changes in postal rates, shipping overseas has become very expensive and the cost unpredictable, depending as much on size and shape of a book as weight. The matrix prices are very unreliable. All packages now go Priority Mail (airmail). Contrary to the matrix, there is no 'standard' rate offered by the post office here. In general (there are exceptions)smaller books (octavos) weighing less than 4 pounds, can generally be shipped for $24.75. Larger books, in general, are $61.75 though this price may be a bit higher or lower. Shipping to Canada is considerably less. Please contact me before ordering and I will send you the actual shipping cost. Please do not rely on the matrix. Also, all books now go Air Mail, and the Post Office estimates delivery in 6-10 days. There is no longer any ground service. Insurance (where available) is optional.
