Early edition; 3 x 5; pp. [4], iii-v, [1], 7-324; contemporary roan; vignettes at end of chapters; some scratches and wear to edges of covers; few rubbed spots; darkening to upper portion of back cover and corner of top edge (not affecting pages); moderate age-toning and spotting mostly to first and last several pages, else text relatively clean; small closed cut to head of spine; very faint penciled name of previous owner - Henry Otis - most probably Henry Otis Pratt (February 11, 1838 - May 22, 1931) who was a lawyer, Methodist Episcopal minister, and two-term Republican U.S. Representative from Iowa's 4th Congressional District. Overall in good or better condition.The author, Christopher Love (1618 ? 22 August 1651), was a Welsh Protestant preacher and Presbyterianism supporter during the time of the English Civil War. He was one of the first to receive Presbyterian ordination under the new organization in 1644. In 1651, Love was accused of being involved in a treasonable correspondence with certain Presbyterians in Scotland and devising plans to restore Charles II to the throne. He was arrested and imprisoned in the Tower of London to ultimately be executed and made an example of in August of the same year.Christopher Love believed that violence was sometimes needed in dealing with sins and the various sermons in his "The Zealous Christian" presented Christians with his insights on ardent prayers and keen studying of the Word, which he believed were the best weapons to be utilized in this 'Holy violence.'OCLC lists one copy at the National Library of Scotland, this the only copy in the trade.
