Synopsis: In Havana in 1980, Polo has just lost his job and Idania has left her husband. Bother are failures; they seek spiritual refuge in the home of a mutual friend, David, El Orate, who takes them in and treats them to some drinks of his homemade liquor. Suddenly, shots ring out close by, which they do not think twice about until they get a call from Gladys, Polo’s wife. She explains that a busload of would-be defectors had crashed through the gates of the Peruvian embassy in order to apply for political asylum and flee the country. Surprisingly, Fidel Castro announces that anyone who wishes to leave the country may do so.
The characters in Zona congelada are faced with doubt and mistrust. They fear that it is just an ambush set up by the regime. But, what they fear even more, is that soon the gates will slam shut and they will be stuck on the island. They are young adults overwhelmed by the circumstances; they feel frustrated and have lost their reason for living. Suddenly, the route to freedom is opened, but now they don’t know what to do. Each one takes a different route.
