About this Item

16mo. Grey cloth with black lettering and pictorial stamping, slipcase with paper label. 192pp. Decorative endpapers. Near fine/very good. Card stock slipcase a bit edgeworn, but strong. A tight and quite attractive third edition of this young adult tale, entirely in German, first published in 1894. Not dated, but a dated (1914) ownership signature on front flyleaf establishes the period. Title translation: "The Twins: A Narrative for Youth." Rather uncommon, especially in slipcase. Lenk (1841-1917) was a prolific German author of children's tales. In 1873 she moved to the U.S. and lived in Illinois, where her husband was a Lutheran pastor, returning to Germany in 1889. No doubt this helped her find an American audience, as attested by the ownership signature of a woman in East Amana, Iowa -- part of the famous colony of German Lutherans in central Iowa.
