About this Item

(14 1/2 x 11 inches). 30 watercolours on native paper, a few lettered in Chinese characters. Expertly bound to style in full green straight-grained morocco, covers with an elaborate wide gilt border, spines in six compartments with double raised bands, lettered in the second compartment, the others with an overall repeat decoration in gilt A beautiful album of Chinese watercolours of flowering trees and plants Beginning in the 1790s and centered in Canton, there existed a thriving trade in botanical watercolours executed by Chinese artists for the Western merchants and sailors who traded through the treaty port. Known as the Company School (after the East India Company merchants for whom the watercolours were originally made), these watercolours are of exceptional quality. The style and materials used by these artists evolved over time, developing from the original purely Chinese tradition of decorative flower painting, to a point where the artists were provided with western materials and produced drawings that followed the Western conventions established for the correct scientific representation of botanical specimens. A prime example of its type, the quality of the present drawings is exceptional. The samples depicted have been chosen primarily for their decorative qualities, and the way that each specimen is presented on the sheet was evidently more important to the artist than pure scientific accuracy. The images include a nice blend of Eastern exotics, as well as representations of peonies, lilies, roses and other flowering varieties. Most are captioned in Chinese characters in the lower left corner. Bookseller Inventory # 25285
