Contemporaries such as Rachmaninoff, Ignaz Friedman, Josef Lhevinne, and Godowsky considered Hofmann to be, overall, the greatest pianist of their generation. Author Nell Graydon, an antique aficionado, bought a desk when Hofman's effects were auctioned in Aiken, South Carolina. After it was shipped to her home, she discovered a secret drawer which contained letters from Josef to his wife Marie. She was inspired to learn more about the international couple, and interviewed members of the Hofman family, who graciously gave her permission to use letters, scrap books, pictures and - best of all - the diary kept by Marie in Europe and Mexico. She collaborated with co-author Margaret Sizemore to turn this source material into this intimate account of the progress of Hofmann's career and his relationship with Marie. Contents: Overture; Russian Tour, 1907; Intermission; Mexican Tour, 1908; Russian Tour, 1909; The Volga Tour; Success; Tristesse; Notes and Sources; Index. Bookseller Inventory #
