About this Item

Two volumes. 220 x 138 mm. 4to. xxiv, (17)-584; 475 pp. Over 120 figs., 9 plates (7 engraved, 2 lithographic), tables; foxed, browned. Original tree calf, gilt spine, red leather spine label; rubbed. Ownership signature of Samuel Tredwell. Very good. Fifth American edition. The Bell's Anatomy of the human body was first published from 1793 to 1804 in four volumes, with illustrations by the authors. From 1816 the book was known as The Anatomy of Physiology of the Human Body. Early editions were printed in four volume, later edition in three, and the last American issue was published in two volumes. John Bell exerted great influence on the development of British surgery, particularly through his work on surgical pathology. He had a special interest in surgery of the blood vessels and was the first to ligate the gluteal artery. An excellent artist, like his even more famous younger brother, Sir Charles Bell, John illustrated his own books, and his engravings of the different parts and organs of the human body are landmarks in the history of anatomic illustrations. Provenance: Samuel Tredwell, MD (1805-1873), married to Amanda Tredwell, lived in Mineola, and Long Island, New York. Was recognized as a "physician and surgeon of eminence and a gentleman of culture and refinement".
