Hungarian Poster Art History Exhibition is an original Hungarian vintage event exhibition poster from 1960 designed by Matyas Gaal Poster for the Hungarian Poster Art History Exhibition that took place in 1960 in Kunsthalle Budapest The exhibition showcased works from the most important local poster artists between 1885 and 1960 The preface of the event s catalog explains The birth of poster art is rooted in the beginning of modern capitalist society and is the fruit of production and competition This does not mean that there had been only commercial posters produced since poster art is constantly improving and many posters promoting culture and ideology had been created However at the beginnings everythng that was advertised was a commodity even if it was a book or a theater play since for the advertiser it was just something to be sold Artistic propaganda became meaningful when artists started to design posters for their own exhibitions Those posters represented the style of the era as well as the manner of their authors The part quoted from the preface can be better intepreted when put in context The exhibition took place in 1960 four years after the 1956 revolution and the year of the legendary poster exhibition that managed to change the standards of Hungarian poster design It was in 1956 after a long period of silently obliging the requirements of the compulsory socialist realist manner that Hungarian artists first rebelled and refused to create works of which the style was forced upon them The attitude towards commercial advertising had advanced and it resulted in numerous positive changes For example from 1958 Hungarian Commercial the journal of Hungarian Advertiser was being published again and there was a competition each year for the best poster The new attitude is in strong relation with the new ways introduced in internal affairs and economy after the defeat of the 1956 revolution The consolidation period after the retaliations following the revolution and the introduction of new economic mechanisms gave grounds to a broader use of advertisements and posters Advertisement became a crucial factor in economy and was regarded as a significant component in stimulating consumption hence production The informative and educative purpose of posters remained but at the same time the genre became the manifestation of improving life standards economy and cultural advancement in the form of modern art The pressure from cultural politics eased and allowed more artistic freedom The poster exhibition of 1960 was a manifestation of the growing significance of poster design The 1960s the time when this poster was made was a very active and rich period of Hungarian poster art G l depicted the classic symbol of commerce the rooster in front of a vivid yellow background The rooster often appears on material realted to poster design as it represents many attributes related to advertising art The composition catches attention with the strong colours and simple shapes The neck of the rooster is an advertising column with the signatures of the artists featured on the exhibition For example Adolf F nyes Istv n Irsai Gitta Mall sz K roly Ferenczy R bert Ber ny K roly Reich J zsef Bottlik Marcell V rtes Gy rgy Konecsni Zolt n Tam ssi G za Farag J nos Vaszary Istv n K peczi B cz Filo and more The signatures present the greatest poster artists active during the period between 1885 and 1960 This lets us suggest that the exhibited material was very thorough covering the whole history of the genre and it materialized the traditions of poster art as well as summerized the freshly introduced novelties of the era The poster is in a good condition the composition is intact but there are numerous small and a few larger tears along the borders that are glued together from the back There are creases light stains and some light fold marks over the surface There is a restored hole above the eye of the rooster The backs.
