Etching/engraving on hand laid paper. Description: "Historie der Nederlandscher ende Haerder Na-buren Oorloge", published The Hague: Hellebrant Jacobz Wou, 1614.Artists and Engravers: Made by an anonymous engraver after 'Emanuel Van Meteren'. Emanuel van Meteren or Meteeren (1535-1612) was a Flemish historian and consul for 'the Traders of the Low Countries' in London. As a historian Van Meteren was special in that he was not merely a chronicler of the events of his time, but also a powerful and wealthy man who influenced those events. The first edition of his 'Historia Belgica' was published in Latin, in Amsterdam, 1597. A continuation was written up to the date of Meteren's death, published in Dutch in 1614. A French translation was published in the Hague in 1618. Van Meteren is the author whose evidence was most important for establishing the innocence of Anne Boleyn. Condition: Very good, given age. Some foxing in the top margin. A faint stain in the lower margin. A printer's crease in the left margin. Text above and below the image and on the verso.
