Antique print, titled: 'Den hoogh-moet doet geen goet, alleen de Borgery Van Hattem, krijght daar deur de boter inde bry.' - ('Pride does no good [.]'). A sailing ship in a storm, with too many raised sails, is in trouble as the main mast breaks down. The diptych in Dutch has an allusion to the bourgeoisie of Hattem, we are unsure how this relates. Etching on hand laid paper. Description: From: The first edition of Jan van Veen's very popular work "Zinne-Beelden oft Adams Appel." Amsterdam: Everhard Cloppenburgh, 1642. This first edition was the only edition to include the French diptychs below each emblem, and the only edition in this larger (4to) size. This popular series describes an ironic description of Dutch contemporary morality, attractively illustrated by landscape / genre scenes in a painterly style. Several later ed. were published. Salomon Savery (1594-ca. 1665) was a Dutch artist, nephew of Roelant Savery. He was one of the most prolific printmakers associated with book illustration in 17th century Netherlands. Condition: Very good, given age. Right margin uneven from binding. Left margin cropped close to the platemark. General age-related toning and/or occasional minor defects from handling.
