The author exhaustively describes the four periods or Schools of Portuguese cartography, correlating them with the emergence, evolution, apogee and decline of national nautical science, while appreciating the scientific, literary and political value of various letters and works written by Portuguese, foreign and anonymous authors. This is one of the most notable works on the subject, only updated in the 1960s and largely retaining the biggest share of the relevance of the presented theses.
