Original chromolithograph from The Grammar of Ornament. Image size c. 46 x 30 cm, overall sheet size c. 55.5 x 37 cm. Mounted. Original print from the first edition of Owen Jones' Grammar of Ornament, the finest of the great chromolithographic books of the period, undertaken following the success of the architectural and ornamental museum in the Crystal Palace in Sydenham. The Grammar of Ornament was a monumental publishing project that achieved standards of colour printing never seen before. Despite the exponential rise of industrial technologies during the Victorian era, printing presses of the day could in no way mass replicate the intricacy of Jones' plates. Working with lithographers Day & Son, he turned to the new and expensive technique of chromolithography, an elaborate method of printing which required up to 20 separate lithographic stones and drawings, one for each colour.
