Woodcut on blueish paper, handsigned and dated in pencil lower left. 33x24 cm. - A previously unrecorded woodcut by Irma Stern, in the year of her first solo exhibition in Fritz Gurlitt's gallery in Berlin. Under the influence of Max Pechstein, Stern began experimenting with woodcuts. She soon gave up upon the medium and focused on lithographs. As far as I know, she never published numbered editions of her few woodcuts, but only pulled a few prints for exhibitions. Marion Arnold, who has seen photographs of this print, considers it an early, still rather clumsy attempt in the medium. She has never seen another copy, but considers it genuine.
