A lovely and extremely RARE copper plate engraving dating to around 1740-60. With a single title "MORTLACK" on a label on the reverse. The label also gives the printer and details of his premises. The image is contemporary hand-coloured (ie 18th century). It is printed on Thicker cartridge paper. It shows in good detail the church of St Mary the Virgin and fishermen and other river craft with pastoral river bank scene of men chatting and smoking clay pipes and cattle. Black border all hand painted on The condition is very good for age, with lower right corner creased and brown spot on top right in the sky area. The label on the reverse is charming and possibly unique. *The printer left his will which now resides in the British Museum in 1764, there was a father with the same name, so it would be before 1764 and maybe even 1710-1730 if it were the 1st Thomas? This business eventually in the 19th century Dean & Son the world renowned company we all remember from our childhood for there array of children's books. This then is not only attractive, 250 years old but of significant historical importance in English publishing. Measures; 19.5 x 34 cm (or just under 8 x 13 inches approx). Rare.
