A hand coloured satirical caricature on the Catholic Relief and/or Emancipation. Lovely condition, the print cut close to border has been window mounted on wider card. Professionally done. Measures just under 10 x 14 inches with backing mount 14. 2 x 18 inches, the back is open so the original backing shows. Paul Pry monogram lower left of image. NOTE* The 3 abase themselves before some dodgy looking Catholic clergy. A Cardinal-Legate with attendant clergy, extends his left arm to give absolution to Lyndhurst, Peel, and Wellington. The two former kneel before the throne, their hands together as if in prayer. Lyndhurst, more abject, has the Purse of the Great Seal under his knees and the mace on the floor beside him. Wellington kneels with folded arms on the dais, his empty throne and its canopy behind him on the extreme left. The Cardinal is stout and arrogant; behind him are two obese and bloated monks or friars; one holds a grotesque image of the Virgin on a pole, the other holds a large lighted candle, as does a small sly-looking priest. There is also a sharp-nosed spectacled Jesuit, holding a triple cross and clasping a rosary. A point that Catholic Emancipation had led to the downfall of the C of E.
