About this Item

A lovely copy of this original, first edition engraving by LANDERER after SCHMIDT. Plate 8 from the series "12 character heads". 20cm x 13cm on backing paper of 29cm x 22cm. Clean and tidy engraving on slightly darkened paper. laid onto heavy laid backing paper. A little marking only. Printing details to base of engraving. The backing paper has a crease to the bottom left edge. Identified, named and dated from identical copies in the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Johann Christian Leopold (1699-1755) Print publisher based in Augsburg; son of Joseph Friedrich Leopold (q.v.); published mezzotints after Piazzetta; until 1760 at the earliest. His son Johann Christian Leopold the Younger (1729-1779), continued his business under the same name. Ferdinand Landerer (1730 Stein unter der Enns - 1795 Vienna) Engraver. Martin Johann Schmidt (Grafenworth, 1718 - Stein an der Donau 1801) Austrian baroque painter. This is an original antique engraving / print from 1760, not a reproduction. .
