Gemma M. Geisman was born in Van Buren, Maine, the twelfth of thirteen children. After high school graduation, she moved to Connecticut where she met her husband,Dick. After his discharge from the Navy, they moved to Ohio where they planned to raise a family and pursue the American dream.
Their dream became a nightmare when Mike, the second of their four children, was born with a catastrophic bone disorder. Wanting to share their story, Gemma took writing courses and became published in various national magazines including Good Housekeeping,Catholic Digest and others. It was a series of three articles in Redbook Magazine that spawned her long career as founder/director/writer/editor for the Osteogenesis Imperfecta Foundation.
Her book,"From the Seeds of Sadness" published May 21, 2009 tells of her family's incredible journey with Mike. It has been called a "family love story" by many who have read it.
