Unfinished Graham Greene Novel Found

A manuscript called The Empty Chair written by Graham Greene in 1926 was found in the vaults of a Texas University archive last year. The manuscript is comprised of five chapters but doesn’t have an ending. A French academic researching the topic “Graham Greene New Perspectives” made the discovery and subsequently transcribed all 22,000 handwritten words.

The Strand Magazine is making the manuscript available to the public by serializing it over the next five editions of the magazine. They plan to run a contest to get readers to write an ending to the story and may also employ a professional writer to bring the tale to a conclusion.  They add though that they want the estate of Graham Greene to be happy.

The Empty Chair predates Greene’s classics such as Brighton Rock and The Quiet American.
