2010 BC Book Prizes

The nominations for the 2010 BC Book Prizes have been announced. For the past seven years, AbeBooks has been a sponsor of the prizes, in the Hubert Evans Award for Non-fiction category.

This year’s other finalists for the prize include a loving and painful memoir of family life on the prairies of Saskatchewan, an intimate portrait of Ted Hughes from a unique perspective, a harrowing tale of man vs. nature in the Arctic, an unflinching discussion of the metamorphosis of farming, and a frank and thorough examination of the city of Vancouver and its growing pains.

I can’t help crossing my fingers for Lorna Crozier’s book, Small Beneath the Sky: A Prairie Memoir for the win. I’m sure they’re all excellent (and actually, all five of them sound like books I’d be interested in reading), but Lorna was one of my profs at the University of Victoria, and she’s a marvellous poet and a really exceptional woman.
