Superman (Comic) Saves the Day

supermanI love a good happy story. A family in the Southern United States has been struggling against the financial tide, and was facing foreclosure on their home that had been in the family for over 50 years. The couple, who asked to not be identified, had taken out a second mortage on the house to fund a new business, but in the faltering economy, the business never made it off the ground, and failed. Out of options, missing mortgage payments and with the bank snapping at their heels, the couple came to the heartbreaking realization that they would lose the house.

Then, in the midst of the unhappy job of packing up the years and years of memories, they came across a box of comic books, which included an ultra-rare copy of Action Comics No. 1, the first comic to ever feature Superman, credited with the popularization of the entire superhero era. And it wasn’t the 1974 replica, and it wasn’t a reprint compilation – it was the original, from 1938. I can’t link to it because there isn’t one on all of AbeBooks. The family had found one of the most sought-after comic books ever, and after its appraisal, they’ve learned that while it probably won’t get quite as high as some of its predecessors, which went for $1,000,000.00 or more, it’s likely to fetch upward of $250,000.00 at auction. They won’t lose their home after all.
