Dennis Hopper’s photography books in demand

out-of-the-sixtiesHollywood bad boy Dennis Hopper died on May 29 at the age of 74. Since the news broke, AbeBooks has seen much interest from customers looking for books portraying the photographic side of his varied career.

Hopper, famous for films like Easy Rider, Apocalypse Now and Blue Velvet, began taking photos in the 1960s when he wasn’t getting much acting work because of his reputation as a difficult actor to work with. Apparently, this then-wife Brooke Hayward bought him a camera and Hopper credits that gift as keeping his creativity alive when he couldn’t act. Oddly enough, his comeback role at the end of the 1970s was in Apocalypse Now where he played a photographer.

Out of the Sixties is an out-of-print photography book by Hopper published by Twelvetrees Press in 1986. There appears to be two editions – one limited to 100 copies and another limited to 4,000 copies.

1961-1967There is also Dennis Hopper: fotografien von 1961 bis 1967. Photographs from 1961 to 1967. This book rare book features 39 of his images exhibited in Salzburg and Dusseldorf in 1988.

A book called Bucharest Nights looks at the actor’s work in digital photography and also his painting, and sculpture.

The prices for the 1969 Signet paperback edition of Easy Rider are also interesting – $1,750 for a copy signed by both Hopper and Peter Fonda.
