Drop Dead Healthy by A.J. Jacobs

We’ve explored the weird, weird world of A.J. Jacobs before. He decided to read the entire Encyclopedia Britannica in The Know-It-All: One Man’s Humble Quest to Become the Smartest Person in the World, decided to spend a year living as faithfully to the bible as he could in The Year of Living Biblically: One Man’s Humble Quest to Follow the Bible as Literally as Possible, and devoted time to various strange endeavors in The Guinea Pig Diaries: My Life As An Experiment . And now, the man most willing to fully explore things to the ends of the Earth is taking on the health industry, full tilt.

His new book, Drop Dead Healthy: One Man’s Humble Quest for Bodily Perfection sees Jacobs fully investigating and taking on an assortment of health claims, fads, diets, exercise crazes, shakes, powders and more. While not overweight, Jacobs acquiesced to being out of shape, flabby and “skinny-fat”, and needing to overhaul his own physical health. Some of the claims he investigated include Chewdaism (which is basically just….chewing your food a whole lot before you swallow), a shoeless jogging regime, and much more to try to get to the bottom of what really works, and whether there just might be a magic pill (spoiler: no.).
