Impressive Collection of Aesop’s Fables Wins Grand Prize

Congratulations to Samuel Jang of Victoria, BC, who was the first place winner in the 2011-2012 National Book Collecting Contest for Young Canadians Under 30, of which AbeBooks was a proud sponsor.

The requirements for the contest were simple – be Canadian, be under 30, and write an essay about your book collection – what you collect and why, where you source your books from, the history of your interest and all that good stuff. Include a list of the books in your collection, and Bob’s your uncle. Jang’s essay about his passion for collecting Aesop’s fables caught the judges’ attention to take home the first prize of $1,000. His passion for Aesop’s fables began 18 years ago (and he’s only 26 now!), and he began combing thrift stores and used bookshops for anything Aesop he could get his hands on. The more he read and collected, the more he learned, and his collecting prowess expanded. Once gainful employment was added to the equation, Jang even procured himself a first edition of Edward Detmold’s 1909 Fables of Aesop, number 229 of 750 copies signed by the artist himself, in nearly perfect condition. You can read more about the editions in his collection in his essay here. The second place prize went to David Fernandez from Scarborough, and Saskatoon’s Gideon Foley landed third prize.

Presentation of the prizes took place on the 28 May 2012 at Simon Fraser University (Vancouver Campus) and the University of Waterloo, Ontario.
