Basquiat for less than $110 million

Imagery from Jean-Michel Basquiat – a $110m artist

Last week’s sale of Jean-Michel Basquiat’s 1982 painting of a skull for $110.5 million shocked the art world. Only 10 other artworks have ever sold for more than $100 million. The price set records for work by an American artist, and by an African-American. It’s the first work created since 1980 to sell for more than $100 million. Not bad for an artist, at times homeless and penniless, who started in graffiti as hip-hop exploded in the late 1970s. Sadly, Basquiat died of a heroin overdose at the age of 27 in 1988 – at the time, he was regarded as the ‘enfant terrible’ of the New York art scene for his artistic interpretations of wealth, class and race in 1980s America.

However, there are many other items – from books to posters and exhibition catalogs – that can offer an insight into Basquiat and his art.
