Leather bound. Condition: Very good. Inscribed by President Rutherford B. Hayes to his beloved niece, Emily Platt Hastings, A Dictionary Of The German and English Languages by G.J. Adler. (illustrator). Early Edition. Thick octavo, xvi, 522pp. Rebound in light brown morocco, raised bands, title in gilt on spine. Light rubbing to edges of text block, reinforced and resewn text block. Includes a collection of re-printed letters from the Rutherford B. Hayes Presidential Library, which detail the close relationship between President Hayes and Emily Platt Hastings. The inscription is affixed to front free endpaper: "To my niece, Emily Platt Hastings - the darling - with love and all good wishes, Rutherford B. Hayes. Spiegel Grove, 4 Oct. 1889." Emily Platt Hastings (1850-1919) was the wife of General Russell Hastings and the niece of President Rutherford B. Hayes. Her husband, General Hastings, served under General Hayes during the Civil War. When the two decided to marry, Miss Platt was living in the White House with her uncle, affording the rare opportunity for a White House wedding. At the time of this inscription, Mrs. Hastings was living in Bermuda with General Hastings, but remained in frequent contact with "Uncle Ruddy," back in Fremont, Ohio.
