19; 47, (5); xvi, 343, (1) pp. A gathering of three apparently unrelated sermons in one volume -- the first a funeral oration for a 25-year-old minister, the second a paean to America at the beginning of the 19th century and the third a series of sermons aimed at bettering the "minds and morals" of the young men of Boston in 1763. The Mayhew sermon is rarely encountered; the last auction record for it was in 1976. An inscription on the second endpaper reads" "The Property of Henrietta M. A. Shaw and Lydia Washburn." Evans: 29275, Shaw & Shoemaker: 31, Evans: 9440. Nineteenth century sheep; black spine label with gilt ("Palmer Alden & Mayhew"). Boards and spine are bumped and abraded with three small worm holes; corners well worn. Internally, the Palmer sermon exhibits dampstaining, soiling and edge wear. The Alden and Mayhew sermons are both very good with only very minor flaws. The Mayhew sermon lacks the half-title, but they are present for the other two sermons. Overall, a very sound volume.
