See his entry in the Oxford DNB. All three in good condition, lightly aged. Each letter 1p, 4to, and folded three times. All three signed William Angell . The recipient s details are given in the first letter as: Rev. A. H. Sayers / Orchard Close / Monmouth. (Sayers was Hon. Sec. of the Monmouth Town Branch of the League of Nations Union.) ONE (TLS, 4 June 1928): He will probably be going into hospital for an operation the following week, and has been warned not to accept further engagements, even in the autumn , until he knows how this operation will leave my general health . He would very much like to visit Monmouth, but had not realised when I spoke to you the other night that doctors would be so insistent; but one is rather helplessly in their hands . TWO (ALS, 16 August 1928): He is fairly right again, but extremely fatigued , and simply must cut down my engagements if I am to carry on very indispensable work, so ask me again next year and I hope then to be in better shape and able to accept your invitation. / This year I am afraid it is impossible. A small newspaper cutting announcing that Angell has been apointed the editor of Foreign Affairs is attached to the letter, with short dating. THREE (TLS, 5 September 1933): Begins: Dear Mr. Sayers, / Alas! I am afraid once more I am forced to refuse your very kind invitation. I am leaving for the United States at the beginning of October and shall not be back until the middle of January next year. He may be able to manage a meeeting in Monmouth , if Sayers cared to renew his invitation. Ends: My usual fee for L.N.U. meetings is five guineas and expenses (third class return fare from London). .

Such of her population as desire to emigrate can and do go to those colonies now, as to the United States, to Brazil and to Argentina. It is calculated that at least twenty millions at the present day in the United States are of direct German descent, and until a few years ago an American city like Milwaukee was far more German than American, the schools, newspapers, institutions, were practically all German. The average German would far rather emigrate to such a place where he will be free from German officialdom. .'' ''.
