Soft cover. Condition: Near Fine. 1858 SLAVERY Benezet & John Wesley on Early American Slave Trade Philadelphia Upon the Whole, of what has been said, it must appear to every honest unprejudiced Reader, that the Negros are equally entitled to the common privileges of Mankind with the Whites, that they have the same rational powers, the same natural affections, and are as susceptible of pain and grief. Benezet, Short Account Anthony Benezet was a French abolitionist, known for his anti-slavery campaigns in America. He published one of the earliest American treatises on slavery in which he set out to describe the horrors and terrible nature of slavery. As a Quaker, he offered abundant propaganda to the American public in hopes of encouraging others to support anti-slavery movements. Benezet wasn t the only European abolitionist to become active in America. English evangelist and preacher John Wesley also found himself leading colonial Methodists hoping to abolish slavery. Wesley spoke out against the slave trade in his book Thoughts Upon Slavery noting Liberty is the right of every human creature, as soon as he breathes the vital air; and no human law can deprive him of that right which he derives from the law of nature . Both of these works were published in 1858 in Philadelphia for the Diffusion of Religious and Useful Knowledge.
