Book First Edition
First edition and first printing. Hardcover. Introduction by Erla Zwingle. A collection of black and white photographs by Richard Avedon and Bill King done for an ad campaign for mink coats which in today's political climate would no doubt have drawn a firestorm of criticism for both Avedon and the many celebrities who posed wearing the coats. Includes images of Lauren Bacall, Bette Davis, Barbra Streisand, Rita Hayworth, Pearl Bailey, Martha Graham, Shirley MacLaine, Diane Vreeland, and numerous others. A near fine copy in paper covered boards with a cloth spine and in an about very good dust jacket with some chips, tears and wear.

Hardcover. Condition: Near Fine. Dust Jacket Condition: Very Good+ dj. Illustrated by (dj design) Barry Littmann (illustrator). First Edition. (price-clipped) [very slight bumping at several corners, no other significant wear to book; the jacket shows a bit of wear at the upper extremities, light surface rubbing (mostly to rear panel), and has a 1/2" tear and associated minor creasing at the bottom front flapfold]. (B&W photographs) The photographic history of one of the most successful advertising campaigns of all time, which consisted of a series of ravishing photos of some of the world's most famous and elegant women -- among them Lauren Bacall, Joan Crawford, Judy Garland, Marlene Dietrich, Barbara Stanwyck, Claudette Colbert, Bette Davis, Barbra Streisand, Lillian Hellman, Liza Minnelli, Helen Hayes and a couple of dozen more, each swathed in Blackgama mink coats or wraps -- a campaign unimaginable today, for several reasons. The earlier photographs in the series, from 1968-1972, were taken by Richard Avedon; Bill King took over the chores in 1972. In his text, Peter Rogers (who implemented the campaign as assistant to its designer, Jane Trahey) tells the behind-the-scenes stories of the various photo shoots, focusing on "the sometimes scandalous, sometimes serene behavior of our most admired women." (There was one man involved as well, legendary dancer Rudolf Nureyev, who was photographed together with Martha Graham and Dame Margot Fonteyn. However, on the page of the book where the photo of the trio was supposed to appear is this explanatory note: "For unknown reasons, Mr. Nureyev refused permission to reproduce the photograph." Bitch!) The hardcover issue of this book is much more uncommon than the paperback.
