George Wildman Ball (December 21, 1909 - May 26, 1994) was an American diplomat and banker. During 1944 and 1945, he was director of the Strategic Bombing Survey in London. He served in the management of the State Department from 1961 to 1966 and is remembered most as the only major dissenter against the escalation of the Vietnam War. He refused to publicize his doubts, which were based on calculations that South Vietnam was doomed. He also helped determine American policy regarding trade expansion, Congo, the Multilateral Force, de Gaulle's France, Israel and the Middle East, and the Iranian revolution. Ball also served as U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations from June 26 to September 25, 1968. During August 1968 at the UN Security Council, he endorsed the Czechoslovaks' struggle against the Soviet invasion and their right to live without dictatorship. Derived from a Kirkus review: An indictment that claims that America's political, military, and economic ties to Israel have obstructed the path to peace and run counter to both countries' interests. The authors--father George, a former undersecretary of state, and son Douglas--charge that Israeli leaders, through much of their nation's history, have subjected the American government to ``a mirage of untruths and bureaucratic obfuscation.'' Except for Eisenhower, US Presidents have backed off from pressuring this US ally after initial protests against settlement policy or lack of military restraint. The authors' balance-scale sometimes seems unfairly stacked here: Arab terrorism, briefly mentioned, is labeled self-defeating, while Israeli attacks, explored in depth, are deemed attempts to wrest a people of their land, in violation of international law. The Balls score points in arguing that America's ``passionate attachment'' is imposing mounting costs, both fiscal and moral. The Jonathan Pollard spy case, Israel's 1967 attack on the Liberty, and the nation's legal treatment of Arabs in the occupied territories are shocking. A frequently convincing call for a new Middle East diplomacy.

AIPAC. history of the middle east. arab history. ~ In his Farewell Address, George Washington admonished his fellow citizens to steer clear of a "passionate attachment" to another nation, as such could create "the illusion of a common interest . where no common interest exists." This warning echoes through the pages of this unflinching examination of our four~decade entanglement in the web of Middle East politics. The distinguished authors here trace the sequence of events that brought the United States into a relationship unique in its history, with its foreign policy often manipulated by another, much smaller nation. The costs have been financial: American aid to Israel well exceeds the total of U.S. payments to reconstruct postwar Europe. The costs have been political and moral: denouncing arms sales as destabilizing to the Middle East, the United States has poured weapons into Israel; while championing national self~determination, the United States has failed to do anything effective to halt Israel's colonization of the West Bank. Israeli forbearance from entering the Gulf War in 1991 and thereby undoing the coalition of Arab States put together by the Bush administration further intensified our passionate attachment. To achieve a durable settlement in an area beset by age~old disputes, the authors call for an end to our unquestioned acquiescence in Israeli action and a broadened role for collective security. In his long and multifaceted career as a diplomat, international lawyer, and statesman, George Ball has been at the center of many crises. He interrogated Albert Speer during the last days of the Third Reich, worked with Jean Monnet in rebuilding Europe, supervised airdrops to save hostages in the Congo, and was one of President Kennedy's advisers throughout the tense days of the Cuban missile crisis. As undersecretary of state in the Johnson and Kennedy administrations, he fought a lonely and protracted fight against our Vietnam involvement. In Washington, as ambassador to the United Nations, and in his continuing career as a columnist and investment banker Mr. Ball has confronted the great issues of our times. Dr. Douglas B. Ball has assisted George Ball in the preparation of several books. He holds a doctorate from the London School of Economics, and master's degrees in history from Yale University and in business administration from Columbia University.
