(photographs) (illustrator). First Edition. Octavo. From the Southwest Historical Series, II. 330 pages, illustrations, folding map at rear of book. Though Bandel spoke very little English and wrote his accounts in German, his daughter Miss Olga Bandel and Professor Richard Jente translated them into English. Bandel was assigned to company e of the sixth regiment of infantry and in 1855 was sent from Jefferson Barracks with a force of 600 men to chastise the Sioux Indians. Later he was in a party to check the depredations of the Kiowa Indians and eventually he was part of an expedition against the Mormons. His accounts are fresh and written with great clarity detailing the Buffalo hunts by both Sioux and the Army. Bound in maroon cloth, spine lettering and top edge gilt. corners lightly bumped, and very nice clean, bright copy.
