Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. This is the first substantial account of a prominent Elizabethan. In 1611 he bought Charterhouse for £13,000 and established a free school for 40 boys and a hospital for impoverished gentlemen. The name Charterhouse came from the order of monks who inhabited the former institution - the Carthusians. The famous public school moved to Godalming in 1872. There are variants of the first edition, this one having the full complement of 3 engraved plates - a folding frontispiece of Charter-House. a portrait of Sutton and a plate of Sutton's tomb. 8vo., pp. xvi, 275, [1], with engraved portrait frontispiece, folding view of Charterhouse, and a folding engraving of Sutton's tomb; occasional light foxing, else a very good, crisp copy in contemporary sprinkled calf, rebacked.First edition. Thomas Sutton (1532-1611) was an Elizabethan civil servant who made an enormous fortune from leases of land rich in coal in Durham. In 1611 he bought Howard House for £13,000 from the Earl of Suffolk; the building acquired its more familiar name, 'Charterhouse', after the order of monks who inhabited the original institution, a Carthusian monastery. Sutton quickly set about establishing a free school for forty boys and a hospital for poverty-stricken gentlemen. By the time of his death, he had organised a Master and a group of governors for the foundation, to which he bequeathed the majority of his fortune. Charterhouse finally opened its doors in 1614. The school moved to its present site in Godalming in 1872.The annual founder's day ceremonies at Charterhouse included a 'Latin Oration in the Hall by one of the Scholars, in Praise of this our most munificent Benefactor'. Here a former pupil has written, 'Spoken by me Bernard Port in the year of our Lord 1793' (p. 161). Language: English.

FIRST EDITION. 200 x 130 mm. (7 7/8 x 5 1/8"). xvi, 275, [1] (errata) pp. Early 19th century panelled calf, raised bands, backstrip of earlier binding expertly laid on, spine gilt in compartments with floral spray centerpiece, botanical cornerpieces, red morocco label. With engraved frontispiece portrait of Sutton and two engraved folding plates, one a view of Charterhouse, the other of Sutton's tomb. Front pastedown with engraved 19th century bookplate bearing the Dunmurry Medlicott arms. ESTC T149589. â Joints and extremities a bit rubbed, three small patches to leather of covers, spine uniformly darkened and somewhat crackled, with trivial chip at head of rear joint, but the binding quite sound and not without appeal, and A VERY FINE COPY INTERNALLY, remarkably clean, crisp, and bright with no signs of use. In outstanding contemporary condition, this work documents the foundation of the London "Charterhouse," an almshouse and school for 40 boys created by the Elizabethan civil servant, Thomas Sutton. Although Sutton (1532-1611) was a commoner, through a series of shrewd business practices he amassed a great fortune. Much to the chagrin of his relatives, Sutton left the vast majority of his wealth--some £50,000--to fund the Charterhouse on the site of an old Carthusian monastery he had acquired from the Earl of Suffolk for £13,000. As DNB tells us, "When Sutton's will was published, it aroused astonished admiration. The new hospital dwarfed all the London charities of the past century. The protestant clergy were jubilant: they hailed Sutton as a 'hero', a 'saint', 'the right Phoenix of charity', his foundation as 'the greatest gift that ever was given in England.'" The Charterhouse formally opened in 1614, and was still in operation when the present account was published more than a century later.
