Book
Hardcover. Condition: VG+. No Jacket. Photos, Figures, Tables (illustrator). !st. In 1952 the authors puiblished the results of their anthropological studies of Australia's aboriginal people. entitled "The First Australians." Twelve years later a much more extensive account of their findings was contained in a new book "The World of the First Australians" based on similar content but encompasseing their research material collected over 20 years of investigation, largely conducted in field-workwith tribes still living a traditional, nomadic life in subsistance conditions. Native people from all areas of Australia were included in the narrative, with its sub-title describing it as "an introduction to the traditional life" of the aborigines. Whereas the first book ran to 144 pages the extent and scope of new material is demonstrated with the updated volume growing to 509 pages. Its 14 chapters cover a host of different aspects of the studies, with a selection of chapter headings indicitive of its wider range, such as --- Origin, Social organisation and structure, Life cycle, Religious belief and practice, Magic and sorcery, Art and Asthetic expression, Death and afterlife and the Aborignies today. Professor Berndt joined the anthropological staff of the University of Western Australia in 1956 and retired as the depapartmen's professor in 1981. He was also the author or editor of 35 books, 15 in co-opreration with wife Helen, also an anthropologist. This comprehenaive joint study of the aborigines must rank among the most important of these. Its easy-read text is complemented by an amazing selection of more than 50 b/w photos depicting different aspects of tribal life, ceremonies and everyday activities. also 12 figures. plus tables. First edition from Ure Smith of 1964, 509 pages including appendix, bibliography and index, Black hard covers are VG+ with few tiny white spots to front board, gilt spine titles on red panel, brown end-papers, with small dealer label lower right front paste-down, text block excellent throughout, no inscriptions.
