Gordon Wasson" -- most remembered for his interest in ethnomycology).

Bilibin was inspired after visiting the visiting the exhibition in the winter of 1898, where he had seen pictures of Viktor Vasnecow fairy-tale motifs. In the summer of 1899 he spent his holidays in the countryside, filled with forests, lakes, and weathered wooden houses, and began work on his friend's country estate with his first fairy-tale illustrations. Clean, bright and crisp copy, slight rub to upper front cover corner, and lower extremity of backstrip. Orig. illustrated chromolithographic front cover and back covers. Near fine.

Hauntingly beautiful chromolithographic images by Ivan Biliban. 4to, measuring 32 by 26 cm, and 12 pp., featuring eight chromolithographs in addition to front cover and the rear cover vignette. Four of the chromos within are full page. In addition, there is the chromo decorative borders, very much a part of the integral whole. This work is part of a series of indigenous fairy tales the Russian government commissioned Bilibin to illustrate. To do so Bilibin paid meticulous care to actual traditional costume, architecture and decor. The work cemented Bilibin's renown, which was also built on stage design. Condition: cover with moderate soiling. Wrap spines with neat tearing running down most of way, but still holding together. Neat ink writing on top of margin.
