Book First Edition
Hardcover. Condition: Good. First U.S. edition. This was the first book from this largely neglected and forgotten writer. She was the daughter of a newspaper man (who was editor of Britain's "Daily Express" newspaper for the first third of the twentieth century), and the wife of Alan Bott, the founder of Pan Books. Her best known book (if known at all) seems to be the gentle, humorous novel, "Pin a Rose On Me" (1958), but she wrote several novels and volumes of short stories, all gentle and humorous. You'd think she'd be ripe for re-discovery by Virago or Persephone. This book is a volume of 21 short stories, or sketches, mostly quite short and all very charming, delightful, pleasant and delicious. It was first published in the UK by Heinemann, but this US edition must have come out very quickly afterwards for there are no notices or reviews on the Doubleday dust jacket (absent on this copy). In fact, this copy is a bit rough! The spine is faded and the paper label is all but worn away. The front endpaper has a large label and some pencil scribbles. The hinge is cracked at the title page. Edges are browned and spotted, and brown spots and foxing affect several pages. Two spreads, pages 88-91, have been scribbled on by, one assumes, a recalcitrant child (I dread to think what punishment would have befallen me!), and a leaf has been torn resulting in the loss of a fragment of text. The rear endpaper has some scribbles as well, and signs of a little damp damage. The best that can be said for this copy (and the reason I am listing it) is that it is a largely sound and readable (except for that fragment on page 89) copy of a very scarce book - and a good book at that.
