Seller: Cat's Curiosities, Pahrump, NV, U.S.A.
Book
Hardcover. Condition: Good. No Jacket. 2nd Edition. "Second Edition Revised and Enlarged . . . Eighteenth Printing, January, 1947" of a book originally copyright 1923. The author illustrates "Bringing in the Sheaves" with Millet's "The Gleaners," stating the overseer "has probably sent the women to this place to gather the stalks so that nothing will be wasted." (In fact, gleaners were grindingly poor peasants who were allowed to gather the remnants after wealthy landowners had taken in the bulk of the harvest -- Millet was widely criticized by upper-class critics for the social commentary evident in this clear contrast between the subsistence peasants and the wealthy harvest gathered in the background.) Reduced from $15.
