Hardback. Condition: Good. First Edition. Borodin, George (pseudonym of George Alexis Milkomane). The Book of Joanna: A Fantasy Based on Historical Record. London, New York, Toronto: Staples Press Limited, [1947]. First edition. Small octavo, pp. [1-7] 8-198 [199-200: blank]. Original blue cloth, spine panel stamped in black, patterned endpapers. A good copy. #596. $12. A short historical novel about the life of the legendary Pope Joan, a woman who is said to have passed herself off as a man and risen through ecclesiastical ranks to the papacy (assuming the name of Pope John VIII). Her first-person narrative, written with her own blood during her residence in the 99th Grotto of Hell, is set within a framing narrative about a heavenly conclave called to decide on her fate. An interesting feature of the story is that the conclave includes the pagan gods as well as Christian saints and other figures. Day, Supplemental Checklist of Fantastic Literature, p. 10.
