Paperback. Condition: Very Good. George Borrow, who knew the Welsh language and travelled the country in 1854 by a route that is still possible to follow today, wrote this account of Welsh landscape, history, mythology, literature and culture. It includes conversations with the diverse characters he met on his journey, ranging from inn keepers and maids, farmers, church wardens and country people to sailors and other travellers. George Borrow travelled to many parts of Britain and Ireland with his father who was an army officer. On his father's death he spent seven years wandering around England - sometimes with gypsies - as described in Lavengo and The Romany Rye. He also wrote The Bible in Spain. Viscount Tonypandy, who writes an introduction to this edition, is the author of George Thomas, Mr Speaker and My Wales. The book has been read, but is in excellent condition. Pages are intact and not marred by notes or highlighting. The spine remains undamaged.

Hardcover. Condition: Fair. No Stock Photos! We photograph every item. edge wear to boards and spine tips, foxing throughout. Falling somewhere between the genres of memoir and novel, Lavengro has long been considered a classic of 19th-century English literature. According to the author lav-engro is a Romany word meaning "word master". The historian G.M. Trevelyan called this "a book that breathes the spirit of that period of strong and eccentric characters".Its protagonist, whose name is never mentioned, is born the son of an officer in a militia regiment and is brought up in various barrack towns in England, Scotland and Ireland. After serving an apprenticeship to a lawyer he moves to London and becomes a Grub Street hack, an occupation which gives him ample opportunities to observe London low-life. Finally he takes to the road as a tinker. At various points through the book he associates with Romany travellers, of whom he gives memorable and generally sympathetic pen-portraits. Lavengro was followed by a sequel, The Romany Rye. Neither of the two books is self-contained. Rather, Lavengro ends abruptly with chapter 100, and carries on directly in the The Romany Rye. Thus both need to be read together, in order.

Paperback. Condition: Very Good. BZ0 - A paperback book in very good condition that has some bumped corners, small tear on the bottom left corner of the spine, lightly curled, some light stains on the page edges, light discloration and shelf wear. Text in Spanish. 9.5"x6.75", 381 pages. Satisfaction Guaranteed. Size: 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall.
Condition: Good. No Edition Remarks. 682 pages. No dust jacket. Red cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. Black and white illustrative plates by William Sewell. Pages and binding are presentable with no major defects. Minor issues present such as mild crinkling, inscriptions and light tanning. Boards have mild edge wear with light rubbing and crushing. Some light marking and tanning. There is bumping to corners. Fraying to cloth in places. Boards are bowed.
