The Civil War had ended, and on October 28, 1865 President Andrew Johnson proclaimed that the country should celebrate a National Thanksgiving Day on the first Thursday of December of 1865. The "National Thanksgiving Services" -- held on Thursday, December 7, 1865, in the Hall of the House of Representatives of the United States of America. -- Discourse by Rev. C.B. Boynton, D.D., Chaplain of the House, and Historic References to Thanksgiving Occasions in Former Eras of Our Republic is part of the record of that day's celebrations. The full text of President Johnson's proclamation appears on the first page of the booklet, with the remainder of the document containing Rev. Boynton's sermon and references to other national thanksgivings. The material is contained in a string-bound sixteen page double-columned booklet, without covers, that measures approximately 5 ¾ x 9 inches. The booklet is a first edition, as printed in Washington, D.C. in 1865 by W. H. & O.H. Morrison. The pages are tanned, but the text is clear and easily read. Most pages are either detached or semi-detached. There is some chipping along the page edges. The overall condition of the item is fair/good. The illustrations accompanying this description show the title page of the booklet and the first page of the text.

Hardback. 12mo - over 6¾" - 7¾" tall. 216 pages; fold out map of Kansas-Nebraska "a new and authentic map, from official sources" is present opposite the title page; this book reports "the results of a tour made in the autumn of 1854" to the Kansas-Nebraska Territories. Tour and book were sponsored by "The American Reform Tract and Book Society," and "The Kansas League" in Cincinnati, to determine if conditions, especially in Kansas, were favorable to support the large scale emigration of anti-slavery Christians to that area to help keep the territory and eventually, the state--free. This book is an anti-slavery promotion urging right-thinking Christians to go west and settle in Kansas. Book condition: Book cover corners are considerably bent and worn (board showing on the corners and also on inside cover open edges); circa 20% of the spine cover is missing, part of the title--"Journey through Kansas, Boynton"--is visible on the spine; hinges are sound; edges have darkened to a tan color; endpapers are missing and there is moderate scattered foxing throughout; book starts with a blank page prior to the fold-out map and title page, and ends on p. 216 ("The end."). Text is complete, and map and text are in Good condition.

The detailed account of a tour sponsored by the American Reform Tract and Book Society, and the Kansas League of Cincinnati, to determine if conditions, especially in Kansas, were favorable to support the large scale emigration of anti-slavery Christians to the region. Excellent description of their voyage up the Missouri River, life in the town of Lawrence in the Kansas Territory, with information on Indian fighting, hunting, winter life on the plains, etc. Text block only, with no cover. Worn at corners and foxed throughout. The fold-out map is present, and pages are solid, making this an excellent candidate for rebinding.
