Hard Cover. First Edition. No copyright date, so presumed first US edition, very good with no dust jacket. Owner's name (partially erased) and 1880 date at top of front pastedown; same name in small letters on title page. Top edge of page block and foredge of pages have a thin line of dampstaining, and there is a faint stain on the front board from water. A couple of signatures in about the middle of the book are slightly loose and don't quite match up with the rest of the page edges. Terra cotta cloth with a gilt decorations and lettering on the front board and spine (gilt is still fairly bright). Bevelled boards have slight wear at edges, and lower corners are worn through at tips. Includes foldout color map at front, numerous illustrations, appendix, and an index; 479 pages.

Mostly complete copy of the 1880 abridged version (only one panel missing from fold-out ocean map.) Book has been wet at top front cover but no damage to interior text, age spots on end-pages. Book inscribed as a gift in 1880. Gilted page-edges. Hardcover has brown cloth boards with gold & black lettering & designs in embossed imprints, but no DJ. Doubtful a jacket was issued for this edition. The author's trip around the world in a "screw composite three-masted topsail-yard schooner" with four children, two dogs, one cat and three birds (not to mention husband, servants & crew!). A Voyage in the Sunbeam, describes their journey around the world in 1876-7, (this voyage is said to have been the first circumnavigation of the world by a private yacht) ran through many English editions and was translated into at least five other languages. Her accounts of later voyages include Sunshine and Storm in the East (1880) In the Trades, the Tropics, and the Roaring Forties (1885); and The Last Voyage (1889, published posthumously). Lady Anna (Annie) Brassey (1839-1887) wrote this account of her family's travels with her husband, Thomas Brassey (1836-1918), 1st Earl Brassey and Governor of Victoria, Australia. This edition contains 66 illustrations (including one of the author), a world ocean map marking prevailing winds & currents on a 5 panel fold-out and entries from the ship's log to document details of climate and navigation. No copyrights, but title page says this copy printed 1880. No specific edition/printing information found, but there are 2 prefaces. one refers to this copy as an abridged edition to appeal to a wider audience of readers. An 1898 Longmans, Green & Co. catalog describes copy this as a "Cabinet Edition" with then MSR of 7s. 6d. No ISBN, LCCN or MSR printed in this copy.
