Copyright page dated 1973. 371 pages. 1/2 inch spot of wear on rear board along spine. Boards are otherwise glossy and quite tidy. Gold lettering on spine shiny and legible. Fore edges dyed blue. Black and white photographs of Gilly's eatery and Portsmouths waterfront as frontispiece. Pages are tidy with more black and white photographs throughout. Binding strong and tight. Hard cover, 8vo, Both volumes are in cream colored linen over boards, titles in gold to spine, 420 pp. and 407pp. Volume One is a facsimile of the 1873 second edition; first published in 1859. Volume 2, (published 1972) is taken from the 1869 edition. These are "informal vignettes," collected from the author's newspaper columns appearing in the "Portsmouth Journal of Literature and Politics," between 1840 and 1860. The author shared his passion for Portsmouth's splendid old houses, dating from colonial to Federalist times, and stories of the people who lived in them. Considered a classic of local history of a town who's port rivaled Boston and New York in the mid-nineteenth century. Includes many vintage photos, and folding pocket maps. Indexed. Condition: Fine in Very Good Dust jackets, which are a bit faded, sunned on the spine, and have a bit of wear to edges. Vol 2 d/j is price clipped. Now in mylar.
