Soft cover. Condition: Very Good. Frank Frazetta; Al Williamson; Reed Crandall; (illustrator). First Paperback Printing. 315 pp. Ace Book N6. Light edge and corner wear with minor creasing on the spine and a slight dent in the front cover; some darkening in the text block and on the reverse of the covers. Cover art by Frank Frazetta, originally done for one of the early Ace Tarzan books, The Beasts of Tarzan; interior line drawings by Frank Frazetta; Reed Crandall; and Al Williamson. The Contents are: Who Was Edgar Rice Burroughs?; The Beginning of a Career; A Phoenician on Mars; To the Earth's Core - and Elsewhere; Barsoom Resumed; The Return to Pellucidar; Wieroos and Kalkars; The Good Pot-boilers; Barsoom Concluded; Wrong-way Carson; The Last Hero; The Backs of Old Letterheads; Tarzan Returns; And Returns and Returns; Ancestors of Tarzan; Tarzan's Greatest Adventures; Last Tales of Tarzan; Descendants of Tarzan; A Basic Burroughs Library; and The Surprise in the Safe; followed by a bibliography and a checklist of Edgar Rice Burroughs' books. Burroughs, of course, created one of the most iconic heroes in the history of North American writing. Few fictional characters hold as firm a place in our culture as Tarzan. His well-received debut in a magazine story in 1912 led to a book-length appearance in Tarzan of the Apes and its sequel, The Return of Tarzan. The two books make up a single extended narrative, taking Tarzan from his earliest days as an orphaned child in the jungles of West Africa. The first Tarzan movie was in 1918, directed by Scott Sidney and starring Elmo Lincoln, Enid Markey, True Boardman, Kathleen Kirkham and others. Recently filmed was The Legend of Tarzan, directed by David Yates in 2016 and starring Alexander Skarsgard, Margot Robbie, Samuel L. Jackson, Christoph Waltz, and a host of others. In between, there were scores of films, radio shows, television episodes, comic books, games, et cetera. And since that first appearance in print, there have been twenty-four official Tarzan titles with almost uncountable editions, and also fresh titles added to the series by a number of different authors. And then there are the other books that were filmed, including John Carter of Mars. Book.
