Coverage of a great racing year--Bold Ruler, Gallant Man, and Round Table in their 4-year-old handicap seasons, Kentucky Derby winner Tim Tam and California phenom Silky Sullivan, 2-year-old Intentionally, and undefeated 2-year-old filly Dark Vintage. Cover photos or paintings of all three handicappers, plus covers showing Sunny Jim Fitzsimmons, Jimmy Jones and Citation, and tough little Eddie Schmidt. Regular features were a "Horse of the Month," "Stars of the Month," "Pacific Coast Notebook," Horace Wade's "Tales of the Turf," a monthly short story, historical articles about people and places, and the handicapping form (track analyses, jockey and horse ratings, etc.). In 1798 his report on defense guided measures to meet the French threat. Bruce was to write a similar report on the requirements of the circumstances created by the uneasy peace of Amiens in 1801.
