First American edition (with "Preface to the First American Edition") Advert endpapers, xvii+146 pp. plus 2-page publsiher's advert atv rear. With three tables and a diagram of a distilling unit. A tight example but good only, rubbed and worn about the extremities and with some rippling to the cloth; dampstaining to the first few laeves gradually diminishing then reappeaing on the last several leaves. Scattered foxing. Sections include: "Distillation", "Brandy, Foreign", "Imitations", "Holland Gin", "Rum, Foreign", "Wines, Foreign"(production, divisions and varieties, amnagaement, imitations), "Ale and Beer" , "Malt Liquors" and an appendix on American liquors (brandies, bitters, rum, whisky) and American wines (blackberry, claret, currant, family, etc), codials, cider, vinegar, whiskey. It is prefaced: 'In this book not one article in the smallest degree approximating to a poison is recommended, yet it teaches how Cognac, Brandy, Scotch and Irish Whiskey, Foreign and Domestic Rum, all kinds of wines from the choicest to the commonest, can be imitated to the perfection that the best judges cannot detect the method of manufacture." (Gabler). Rare in the trade. Modest wear to binding (rubbing to edges, sunning to spine and boards). Endpapers age-toned & stained. Previous owner's inscription to front fly-leaf. Damp staining to bottom right corner beginning at front fly-leaf and continuing (albeit faintly & unobtrusive) throughout text. Appendix pages age-toned. An About VG - VG copy.
