"When eight-year-old Adelino Serras Pires first arrived on a boat from Portugal in 1936, Mozambique was a tropical paradise, where native tribes and Portuguese colonists lived in harmony and where vast wilderness areas held the promise of endless excitement. A few weeks into Adelino's new life, his father took him along on a successful hunt for man-eating lions that had been terrorizing the countryside. From that point on, Adelino's destiny was sealed - he would spend his days in the African bush, hunting for a living and living for adventure. After a childhood replete with thrilling episodes, Adelino became a major safari organizer with a client list comprising African royalty, European aristocracy and dignitaries, American astronauts and adventurers from around the world. Life in Mozambique, however, came under increasing threat to all its inhabitants as a foreign-incubated mood of violence began to take root. The Frelimo guerrilla movement, bent on ousting the Portuguese and on crushing all internal dissent, began launching attacks throughout the land. Such attacks resulted, amongst other things, in injury and death involving safari clients. This forced Adelino into a war of his own as he fought back to the end in a country that had long since become his permanent home. What follows is a frightening look at a continent under siege. As Adelino moved through sub-Saharan Africa - each time resuming his life's ambition - he repeatedly witnessed the violence and horror of armed conflict. Like a hunter stalking its prey, it was only a matter of time before the forces of revolution brought him down too. That day came when Adelino, his son, his nephew and a fellow hunter were abducted in Tanzania and turned over to the secret police in Frelimo-controlled Mozambique. In hair-raising detail, Adelino recounts months of torture and interrogation in Mozambique and in Tanzania, which almost cost him his life, and the treacherous circumstances that landed him in that hell. The Winds of Havoc is a story of Adelino's steady disillusionment, as the beauty of Africa slowly gave way to political turmoil corruption and decline. But more than that, this book is a moving portrait of a life and time that are now gone forever." .

Condition: new. (Hardcover, 2011). 2011 1st edition. Large 4to (215 x 281mm). Ppxxvi,182. B/w photographs, photograph end-papers. Blue cloth, upper board and spine titled in gilt. Fine new copy in dust-wrapper. "One of the most memorable chapters in the history of early 20th century Africa is now being shared with the Anglophone world for the first time. German East Africa and the subsequent British Mandate of Tanganyika are the backdrop to the astounding life and times of Margarete Trappe, who came out to settle in the German colony in 1907 where she died half a century later. This young woman and her husband Ulrich, trekked on foot over several weeks with their retinue from near Tanga on the coast to the foothills of Mount Meru. This pioneering couple went on to develop an estate of great renown for its livestock, dairy herds, horse stud and agricultural achievements. Margarete had a special affinity with the tribal peoples of her new world who embraced this young woman of translucent goodwill from a distant country and who remained by her side to the very end of her often tortuous life." Margarete Trappe's adult life played out against the background of Germany's colonial experiment which was short and inglorious. Towards the end of the nineteenth century, the German government had laid claim to half of the Sultan of Zanzibar's mainland territories, lost them during the 1914-18 war and then seen them made Mandates of the League of Nations with a view to their future independence. This German East Africa Protectorate became the Mandate of Tanganyika, and then Tanzania when Zanzibar was federated unequally with the mainland at independence. The Trappes' lives consisted of carving out a farm in a region previously unsettled, where Europeans had acquired a hideous reputation in advance through the activities of the German government's colonisation agency, losing the farm during the Great War, getting it back and rebuilding it, going through something very similar during and after the Second World War, and then the upheavals as the African colonies became independent in the 1950s and '60s. More than enough for any lifetime. .

Fiona Capstick has spent years delving into diaries, journals, articles and books written by or about the world's many unsung huntresses, tracing their role in hunting from the early gatherer-hunter societies, to the incredible accounts of the sportswomen who made their mark in the world's hunting fields in the late 19th century." "All of the huntresses Fiona has featured exhibited the kind of strong reliance that commanded respect in the field. These fascinating women recorded many of their adventures in several books, taking us on amazing trips to Africa, Alaska and the freezing world of the Caucasus region as they stalked, hunted and observed, living with a new joy and confidence in themselves and life. This book contains such grand stories that one is captivated into reading them over and over again." Joan Vernon Gordon "Superbly written with considerable historical content, this book will appeal to all today's hunters and huntresses, armchair adventurers and the general reading public, and will likely head the bestseller list."
