Original dark red cloth, spine gilt, front board gilt-ruled with gilt-stamped publisher's logo center, t.e.g. Spine slightly faded. Interior generally clean and unmarked. Publisher's card laid in. Overall very good. Lakeside Press reprint of the 1868 original with introduction by historian Milo Quaife. This is number forty-eight in the Lakeside Classics series. Mrs. Carrington apparently had little personal experience among the subjects of this work, which derives itself mostly from speculation and camp gossip. Field describes Carrington's publication therefore as "pleasing, but not very valuable [historically]," although notable for the personal narrations of restored captives - primarily women who were widowed by their captors. ABSARAKA was also somewhat successful as a public defense of the author's husband, Colonel Henry Carrington, who received much of the blame for the infamous Fetterman defeat (or "Fetterman Massacre"), which his men suffered while he was in command of Fort Phil Kearny.
