Tipped in typed signed letter from Barbara Barclay Carter to a 'Miss Elwes'. written on headed notepaper from 213B Gloucester Terrace, W.2. dated July 7 (no year) and consisting of about 340 words in which she thanks Miss Elwes for her 'most kind letter' about the book and says 'as you may imagine, it was a great joy to me, for the praise of anyone with such a love and understanding of Dante makes me feel indeed that I have not written in vain.' American born Barbara Barclay Carter (1900 1951) was brought up in England. She became a Catholic convert who translated numerous Italian works, championed Anglo-Italian relations and supported the Italian democratic cause. 'Ship Without Sails' was Carter's early historical novel about Dante. The title on the spine includes the words 'Telling of Dante in Exile'. Front hinge starting, but holding firm, small tears on lower joint Very good. Minor signs of ex library status.
