Perteneció al grupo de escritores que fundó la revista Tierra Nueva. Fue redactor de la revista El Hijo Pródigo y de México en la cultura, así como director de Letras de México. Desde 1964 es miembro de la Academia Mexicana de la Lengua. Como autor, editor, redactor y corrector ha sido una de las figuras claves en la historia del Fondo de Cultura Económica. Por su trayectoria como poeta ha recibido muchos premios, entre los que destacan el Premio Xavier Villaurrutia (1984), el Premio Internacional Alfonso Reyes Ochoa (1986), el Premio Nacional de Ciencias y Artes en Lingüística y Literatura (1987), el Premio Estatal de Literatura Amado Nervo (1993) y la Medalla Belisario Domínguez del Senado de la República (1996). Poeta austero pero de gran intensidad lírica, Alí Chumacero sólo ha publicado tres colecciones de poesía y un disco donde las recita: Páramo de sueños (1940), Imágenes desterradas (1948), Palabras en reposo (1956) y En la orilla del silencio y otros poemas en la voz del autor (CD).
