Folio (10 3/4" X 16"). Near fine. Single leaf (pages 219-220) of the April 5, 1862 issue of the popular weekly publication. A large steel engraving fills page 220, surrounded by a nautical rope border, the upper half consisting of an image of this ironclad at sea, a rowboat filled with sailors in the foreground. A narrow middle image shows a couple of cutaway views of the ship's hull. The bottom half is an image titled "Gun-Deck of the New Iron-Clad Steamer "'alena,'" and depicts the ship's interior, with rows of cannons ready for action. The U.S.S. Galena was onew of the first three ironclads produced by the Union Navy. A lovely contemporary image published just two months after the ironclad was launched (February 14) and two weeks before she was commissioned (April 21).
